HBCUv

HBCUv is a platform for community learning, that in partnership United Negro College Fund and 9 Historically Black Colleges & Universities, looks to “reimagine the Black college experience online.” HBCUv, which stands for HBCU Virtual, is a shared community asset that provides digital learning infrastructure for a community of HBCUs, facilitates for-credit course-sharing between HBCUs & and most importantly complements that high-touch culturally-rich learning environment that makes up the secret sauce of an HBCU education. Every aspect of this project was approached from the point of view of “what would happen if HBCUs shifted from doing more with less to doing more with more” – from the research, to the technology chosen, to the design.

We developed a bold brand identity system that mirrors the unapologetic pursuit of identity, community, and achievement HBCUs empower. It brings to life the multidimensional experience of Blackness – ensuring diverse backgrounds, experiences, ambitions are reflected–and displays the lively energy, colorful culture, and Black joy experienced at HBCUs.

The HBCUv logo gives a nod to the original UNCF logo, while carrying the message forward in this modern approach. The “v” within the logo stands for virtual. The typographic style is uncommon and strong with shape language that is moving the lockup forward. Directly inspired by the connection with letterforms and with the UNCF logo. By taking what has already been achieved and established and moving into the future, we were able to create a new visual framework that would allow for the next generation to own.
